Entry Requirements
UK travellers do not need a visa for stays under 90 days in French Polynesia. A return or onward ticket is required, and passports must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season runs from May to October and is considered the best time to visit. Expect warm temperatures, lower humidity, and calmer seas, which are ideal for snorkelling, diving, and beach relaxation.
Vaccinations
No specific vaccines are required from the UK, but it is recommended to be up to date with routine immunisations like Tetanus and Hepatitis A. Check with a travel clinic before you travel for the latest advice.
Currency
The official currency is the CFP Franc (XPF). Credit cards are widely accepted in resorts and towns, but carry some cash when visiting smaller islands or markets, as not all vendors accept cards.
Language
French is the official language across the islands, but English is spoken in most hotels, shops, and tourist areas. Learning a few French or Tahitian greetings will be appreciated by locals.
Electricity
French Polynesia uses 220V with Type E and Type C plugs, the same as France. UK visitors will need a suitable plug adaptor. Electricity is reliable on main islands but may be less consistent in remote areas.
Bora Bora
Known for its overwater bungalows and turquoise lagoon, Bora Bora is a dream destination for luxury, romance, and water-based adventures like snorkelling, diving, and jet skiing.
Tahiti
The largest and most populated island, Tahiti blends urban life with waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and vibrant markets. It also serves as the main gateway to the rest of French Polynesia.
Moorea
Just a short ferry ride from Tahiti, Moorea offers dramatic mountains, lush jungles, and snorkelling with rays and reef sharks. It’s a favourite for active travellers and honeymooners alike.
Rangiroa
This remote atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago is one of the world’s top diving spots, offering drift dives, dolphin encounters, and coral gardens in an endless blue lagoon.
Huahine
A quieter alternative to the popular islands, Huahine is rich in archaeological sites, vanilla plantations, and small villages where traditional Polynesian life is still present.
Taha'a
Known as the Vanilla Island, Taha'a shares a lagoon with Raiatea and offers tranquil beaches, pearl farms, and fragrant vanilla plantations you can explore on guided tours.
Getting Around
Island-hopping is common and often necessary. Domestic flights and boat transfers connect the islands, with Air Tahiti offering passes for multi-island trips. Book transport in advance during peak seasons.
Packing Tips
Bring light, breathable clothing, swimwear, a sunhat, reef-safe sunscreen, and sandals or water shoes. Insect repellent is useful, especially in the wetter months. Dress is casual and resort wear is widely accepted.
Weather Variability
The rainy season is from November to April, with higher humidity and occasional storms. The dry season is more stable but also more popular, so plan and book accommodation early to secure availability.
Culture & Etiquette
Polynesians are warm and welcoming, and respectful behaviour is valued. Greetings with a smile, modest dress in villages, and avoiding beachwear in shops or churches will be appreciated by locals.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is available at most hotels and resorts, though speed may vary. Mobile coverage is reliable in larger islands but can be limited on remote atolls. SIM cards are available at the airport and in Papeete.
Health & Safety
French Polynesia is generally very safe for tourists. Tap water is drinkable in Tahiti and Bora Bora but bottled water is recommended in smaller islands. Medical services are good in larger towns, with clinics on most islands.
Overwater Bungalows
French Polynesia is credited with inventing the overwater bungalow, which has since become a symbol of tropical luxury. Many properties offer direct access to coral reefs and private decks for sunbathing.
Tahitian Pearls
The islands are world-famous for their black pearls, which range in colour from dark green to silver and blue. Visit pearl farms to see how they are cultivated and choose your own souvenir.
Heiva Festival
Held each July, this cultural festival celebrates Polynesian heritage through dance, music, sports, and costume. If you’re visiting in summer, it’s a vibrant way to experience local traditions.
Volcanic Origins
The islands are volcanic in origin, which explains their dramatic mountains, lush forests, and deep lagoons. Hiking trails offer breathtaking views across craters and coastlines.
Polynesian Tattoos
Tattoos have spiritual and cultural significance in Polynesian culture. Traditional designs are still worn proudly and can be seen in museums, artwork, and on local people throughout the islands.
Warm Waters Year-Round
The ocean around French Polynesia remains warm and inviting in every season, with average temperatures between 26°C and 29°C. Perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and paddleboarding throughout the year.
