Useful Information for your trip to Guatemala
Entry Requirements
UK citizens can enter Guatemala without a visa for up to 90 days. A valid passport with at least six months remaining is required. Onward or return travel documentation may be requested.
Best Time to Visit
November to April is the dry season and the most popular time to visit. This period is ideal for exploring ruins, lakes, and colonial towns without heavy rainfall.
Vaccinations
No mandatory vaccinations are needed, but Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are recommended. Yellow fever is required if arriving from a country with transmission risk. Consult your GP or travel clinic before departure.
Currency
The Guatemalan Quetzal (GTQ) is the local currency. US Dollars are also accepted in some places. Credit cards are widely used, though rural areas often operate on a cash-only basis.
Language
Spanish is the official language. Over 20 Indigenous languages are also spoken. English is spoken in some tourist areas, but learning a few Spanish phrases is helpful and appreciated.
Electricity
Guatemala uses 120V supply with North American plugs (Types A and B). UK travellers should bring a suitable travel adaptor and voltage converter for sensitive electronics.
Lake Atitlán
Surrounded by volcanoes and traditional Mayan villages, this high-altitude lake is ideal for kayaking, hiking, and experiencing local culture in towns like San Juan and Panajachel.
Antigua
A beautifully preserved colonial town with cobbled streets, historic churches, and views of nearby volcanoes. It's a hub for culture, coffee tours, and Spanish language schools.
Tikal
One of the most impressive ancient Maya sites in Central America. Explore towering pyramids and forest trails where howler monkeys echo through the jungle canopy.
Semuc Champey
This natural limestone bridge and series of turquoise pools is tucked into the jungle and perfect for swimming, cave exploring, and enjoying untouched beauty.
Chichicastenango Market
One of the largest and most colourful markets in Central America. Shop for handmade textiles, masks, and local crafts while experiencing the lively Indigenous traditions of the region.
Pacaya Volcano
An active volcano near Guatemala City that you can hike with a guide. Roast marshmallows over warm rocks and witness dramatic landscapes shaped by eruptions.
Getting Around
Shuttle vans and buses connect most tourist destinations. Hiring a driver can offer more flexibility. Road conditions vary, and travel may take longer than expected in rural areas.
Safety Tips
Stick to known tourist areas and avoid night travel where possible. Use hotel safes for valuables and take licensed taxis or hotel-arranged transport for local trips.
Packing Essentials
Include lightweight layers, a rain jacket, comfortable shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a torch. Bring modest clothing for visiting villages and churches.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and cafés, especially in major tourist towns. Mobile coverage is good in populated areas, but may be limited in rural regions and national parks.
Cultural Respect
Guatemala has a rich and diverse Indigenous heritage. Always ask before photographing people and respect local customs and ceremonies.
Eco Travel
Support sustainable travel by choosing eco-lodges, guided community experiences, and locally owned services that protect both the environment and traditional ways of life.
Maya Heartland
Guatemala was at the core of the ancient Maya civilisation. Today, millions of Guatemalans maintain Maya languages, dress, and traditions in their daily lives.
Volcano Views
The country has over 30 volcanoes, some of which are active. Watching Fuego Volcano erupt from a distance at night is a breathtaking experience.
Textile Tradition
Handwoven textiles are a hallmark of Guatemalan culture. Each region has its own colours and patterns, often passed down through generations of artisans.
Colourful Buses
Public buses known as “chicken buses” are converted American school buses painted in bright colours. They're cheap, lively, and a cultural experience in themselves.
Floral Exports
Guatemala is one of the world's top exporters of cut flowers, especially to the United States. Its fertile soil supports a wide range of flora and agriculture.
UNESCO Sites
Tikal National Park and Antigua Guatemala are UNESCO World Heritage Sites that showcase the country’s impressive natural beauty and colonial architecture.
